One gets shields from them like in normal disband, or not? Not sure if we want to differentiate whether player disbanded the unit when it's evident that it will get disbanded anyway, and the automatic disband.

In new versions, it's ruleset defined if we try to usefully disband a unit, but it can be done to any upkeep (and not necessarily the unit is in its home city, or in any city, when the shields run out). By default, it's as far as I can see just wiped. I believe, scoring of any upkeep losses should be similar.
We also don't have separate counter for units used/disbanded, so ones not counted as "lost" are not counted anywhere. We should probably add such a counter (d3f -> 3.2)

Ok, so this is not even consistent between different upkeep types.
The difference between master and d3f branches' patches is that latter does not expose the new ULR_UPKEEP to lua script.
They are wiped with ULR_DISBANDED like it were voluntarily.
