cinit is a fast executing, small, and simple init
with support for profiles. It is aware of
dependencies and executes processes in parallel.

serel is a utility that helps computers to boot faster by adding synchronization and integrity- checking to the operating system's "service startup" phase, allowing services to be started in parallel. The software supports the visualization of services, dependencies, and timings.

Autopoweroff is a script that shuts down a
computer at a specific time, but only if some
conditions are met. It works well on home
routers/firewalls where the machine can be
switched off every night and powered back up in
the morning. It can be configured to only shut
down the server after any computers which depend
on the server for Internet access have been shut

OpenBIOS is an effort to produce an OpenFirmware (IEEE 1275-1994) compliant firmware. OpenFirmware is used by SUN, Apple, and others.
qingy is a replacement for getty. It uses DirectFB
to provide a fast, nice GUI without the overhead
of the X Windows System. It allows the user to log
in and start the session of his choice (text
console, GNOME, KDE, wmaker, etc.).
DOCSIS Server is a DHCP/TFTP/TOD/syslog server
that uses MySQL as a backend. If you have a
DOCSIS Cable Modem headend, you can use this
server to boot up cable modems and assign IP
addresses to customer premise equipment. With a
little bit of tweaking you could also use it as
just a DHCP server attached to a MySQL database.
It was designed to boot up more than 150 modems
The devfsd program is a daemon, run by the system
boot, which can provide for intelligent management
of device entries in the Device Filesystem
(devfs). It is desirable to start the daemon at
the beginning of the boot scripts, in particular
before filesystem checks.

Kerrighed is a Single System Image operating
system (SSI) for clusters. It offers the view of a
unique SMP machine on top of a cluster of standard
PCs. The goals are high performance of
applications, high availability of the cluster,
efficient resource management, high
customizability of the operating system, and ease
of use. It is implemented as an extension to Linux
operating system (a set of Linux modules and a
small patch to the kernel).

ethwireck can detect if the physical layer of the
Ethernet is up. Laptops which use dynamic IP
address assignment via DHCP have the problem that
the boot process is much longer when no wire is
connected to the Ethernet card. This is because
the startup scripts have to wait for the DHCP
request to time out. ethwireck can be used in the
init script for your network card to determine
whether or not an interface should be brought up.
In other words, a timeout is avoided.
The DOCSIS config file encoder converts a human-readable text configuration file into a binary configuration file compatible with DOCSIS cable modems or PacketCable Multimedia Terminal Adapters (MTAs).
Hotplug lets you plug in new devices and use them
immediately. That means that users won't need to
learn so much system administration, since the
Linux system will at least partially autoconfigure
itself. Initially, hotplug included support for
USB and PCI (Cardbus) devices, and could
automatically configure some common network
interfaces. Updated versions include IEEE 1394
(Firewire/i.Link) support and can download
firmware to USB devices that need it.

Firewall is a set of scripts (firewall, fwup, and fwdown) that implement an
ipchains firewall and various forms of network address and port translation.
All you have to do is read the policy file and edit it to reflect your topology
and filtering policy. It supports many different types of network topology
(single host, traditional forwarding, masquerading, port forwarding, alias port
forwarding and NAT), up to 10 untrusted interfaces each with their own policy,
and over 50 network applications. It also supports centralised administration
of multiple remote firewalls (meta-firewall).
