Memtest-86 is a very thorough stand-alone memory test for x86 and Pentium systems (and compatibles). It currently does 11 tests to fully determine whether you have faulty RAM or not.

Major feature enhancements
Testing of more than 2GB of memory is finally
fixed. The infrastructure is now able to poll ECC
error reporting chipset regisets, and the support
has been added for some chipsets. Dynamic
relocation information records are now used to
make the program's own PIC instead of requiring 2
copies of memtest86 in the binary. The serial
console code no longer does redundant writes to
the serial port. The program is now slightly
slower at 9600 baud. Netbooting is working again.
LinuxBIOS support for getting the memory size was
added. Many bugfixes and code cleanups were done.

The memory sizing code has been completely rewritten. Testing of more than 2gb of memory should now work. Memory is now divided into segments for testing, and there are minor bug fixes.

The build process has been reworked to make it far more simple, and also to produce a network bootable ELF image. The memory and cache speed detection code has been rewritten. Previously, the reported numbers were inaccurate for intel CPUs and completely wrong for the Athlon and Duron. The serial console is disabled by default since it was slowing down testing. CPU detection for the Pentium 4 and 5 has been added, and there are minor bugfixes.

This release includes more workarounds for errors caused by BIOS USB keyboard support, reworking of L1/L2 cache detection to provide clearer reporting, a fix for an obvious bug in the computation of cache and memory speeds, a menu option to disable the serial console, changes to the online menu to stay in the menu between option selections, fixes for bugs in the test restart and redraw code, adjustments to fix compilation problems under Red Hat 7.1, and some miscellaneous updates to documentation.

A screen buffer has been added so that menus will work correctly from a serial console. The Memtest86 image is now built in ELF format.
