SANE stands for "Scanner Access Now Easy" and is an application programming interface (API) that provides standardized access to any raster image scanner hardware (flatbed scanner, handheld scanner, video and still cameras, framegrabbers, etc.). The SANE standard is public domain and its discussion and development are open to everybody. The source code is written for UNIX (including Linux) and is available under the GPL, but commercial applications and backends are welcome. The package contains the libraries, net support, and scanimage. The X frontends xscanimage and xcam can be found in sane-frontends.

Many portability fixes (especially for Mac OS X, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and OS/2) have been applied. Fixes for scanimage and the build system were implemented. sane-find-scanner detects more chipsets now. Most translations were updated.

There is a new backend ("u12") for the Plustek OpticPro U12 and compatible scanners. There is support for Linux USB hot-plugging. A Danish translation has been added. Other translations have been updated. sane-find-scanner knows about more chipsets now. There have been portability fixes (especially for Mac OS X, NetBSD, OpenBSD, and OS/2), build system fixes, documentation updates, and miscellaneous bugfixes.

Two new backends were added: "mustek_pp_ccd" for

Networking and USB fixes and updates were made,
and support for threading was improved. MS Windows

scanner descriptions.
