The POP and IMAP troubleshooter serves to diagnose and solve connection problems from client machines to email services. It reads the client configuration files (Outlook, Windows Mail, Thunderbird, etc.), checks the individual settings, and then attempts to create POP, IMAP, and SMTP connections using these settings. The troubleshooter is coded in C++ using the Qt environment. It can be used generically, or can be customized for the demands of a particular email service.

qmailfordummies simplifies the installation of
the powerful mail server qmail, Web mail,
IMAP, and a mail administration system. A
single binary file automates the process for
RedHat 7.1 on i386 platforms.

Inbucket is an email testing service, similar to Mailinator. It accepts messages for any email address and makes them available to view via a Web interface. It allows Web developers, software engineers, and system administrators to quickly see the emailed output of their applications. No per-account setup is required. Mailboxes are created on the fly as mail is received for them, and no password is required to browse the content of the mailboxes.

Perl Mail Grabber (PMG) is yet another POP3 email
retriever program. It handles multiple users,
multiple POP3 maildrops, and provides spam
blocking and email routing services.

pop3filter is a POP3 transparent proxy with
support for filters. It allows you to apply
filters to your incoming emails (to rename
attachments or detect spam) even if your user
agent doesn't have a feature for piping your email
messages to an external program and you can't use
a mail delivery agent.

This patch for gnu-pop3d allows multiple POP3 users to have the same username by having separate password files and mail spool directories for each domain.

Replex is an administrative tool for managing
email on any Unix-like OS. It can handle multiple
domains, users, mailing lists, etc. without
requiring creation of Unix user accounts for
mailboxes or authentication. Replex is written in
PHP4 and stores all information in a MySQL
database. Replex relies on Postfix for SMTP and
Cyrus for IMAP and POP3 accounts.

ooop is an SSL-capable POP 3 server that supports
the maildir format. It offers various
authentication methods, such as passwd file, LDAP,
Radius, MySQL, and DB4.

POPauthd is a Perl-based daemon that uses POP to
authorize connecting hosts for SMTP relaying. It
is particularly useful to authenticate roaming
users with IP addresses that change often. The
daemon runs in the background, watching the syslog
for successful POP logins. When it sees one it
enters the IP in sendmail's access database,
giving the host authorization to relay through the
server. The entries can be expired after a
prescribed, configurable period of time with a
companion script run via crontab.

dirqmail is a simple, fast, and reliable virtual user system for
qmail.

popb4smtp.pl monitors qpopper and UW-IMAP maillog entries and updates the Sendmail access database to allow relaying for POP and IMAP authenticated users.

Pulsar is a POP3 email server with a configuration file, multiple authentication mechanisms (PAM, MySQL, Unix, or plaintext file), realms (virtual hostname and IP based), TCP wrappers, and support for multiple mailspools in mbox and Maildir format.

PoCoMy is a Web frontend for administration of a
Postfix/Courier/MySQL email system. It is
multi-user and includes a multi-language
privileges system, delegation of rights per
domain. The virtual mail system features virtual
domains, forwarding, aliases, sender-aliases, and
more.

SmartPost is a complete email platform based on Davide Libenzi's xmail. It has Web interfaces for adding and managing email domains, for postmasters to manage their email users, and for users to send and receive email.

Twisted Mail provides client and server implementations of SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4. These differentiate themselves from the Python standard library implementations both by presenting a much higher-level, easy-to-use interface and in their server components, which allow the implementation of custom servers for each protocol without dealing with protocol-level issues. Twisted Mail includes a simple demonstration email server which accepts messages over SMTP, stores them in a Maildir arrangement, and can serve them to clients over POP3.
